City of Belmont
Home MenuThe City of Belmont recognizes the need for active legislative engagement at the local, state, and federal levels to protect and enhance the interests of Belmont’s residents and businesses. Accordingly, City officials and staff maintain close relationships with Belmont’s state and federal representatives to advocate, influence and monitor pertinent legislation.
The City’s Legislative Platform contains broad policy statements pertaining to a variety of issues that impacts us. The Legislative Platform provides a policy framework for the City to respond to legislative issues important to the City in a timely manner, including correspondence from the Mayor or City Manager to the Legislature and/or Congress, and collaborating, when appropriate, with the League of California Cities. The City’s primary legislative focus includes protecting local government control, improving public safety, maintaining local government revenues, obtaining funding for environmental sustainability, transportation, recreational, technology and infrastructure improvements.
By implementing and maintaining an active legislative advocacy program, the City can ensure that the City Council and staff would be fully apprised of evolving state initiatives that may affect the City’s key priorities, programs, or operations. In addition, having a legislative advocate with a physical presence in Sacramento is important for tracking legislation that might impact the City, and will help in building relationships with key elected officials and their offices.
Accordingly, the statements outlined within the Legislative Platform are intended to assist the Mayor, Councilmembers, and staff to pro-actively and appropriately address legislation to promote City interests and preserve local legislative authority when necessary.
