City of Belmont Governing Body
The City Council is the governing body of five members elected directly by the residents of Belmont. As the legislative branch of our local government, the Council makes final decisions on all major city matters and sets city-wide priorities and policies. The Council directs the City Manager to implement these priorities and policies.
The City Council exercises the legislative powers of city government, including adopting the annual City budget, ordinances and resolutions; setting appropriate tax levies; establishing sewer and water rates, setting other general tax and service rates. The Council also serves as the Board of Directors for the Belmont Fire Protection District and Joint Powers Financing Authority.
It appoints the City Manager, and City Attorney, as well as the members of the City's advisory boards, commissions, and committees.
