On August 6th, 2020, the Belmont City Council Sub-Committee met with the Belmont Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) to listen to their concerns and recommendations as they relate to the Belmont Police Department’s School Resource Officer (SRO) program. A very educational discussion ensued, and as a result of this meeting, the Sub-Committee learned that the students desired more interaction with the SROs, and had three specific requests. First, the YAC asked that the SRO assigned to Carlmont High School (CHS) participate in greater depth at the annual Freshman Orientation event. Next, the group asked that the SRO at CHS teach a section of the “Life Skills” class, during which police procedures could be explained which would result in a greater amount of transparency. And finally, the YAC requested CHS’s SRO to hold a “Town Hall” type meeting to allow for a Q&A session with all Carlmont students, as the Life Skills class is only for Freshmen.
