Home MenuCITIZEN’S REPORT
The Belmont Police Department recognizes that providing effective police services requires that a proper relationship, created through confidence and trust, be maintained between the department and the citizens of the community. An essential part of this relationship is the Department’s responsibility to provide a process whereby all citizens can make known their complaints regarding police services and be assured of a prompt and unbiased review.
It is essential that our process protect the rights of all citizens and police personnel, while at the same time allowing police personnel to carry out their responsibilities in a reasonable, lawful and unbiased manner. This process must acknowledge that the limits of police authority are strictly prescribed by law, and that there can be no situation which justifies law enforcement practices which go beyond the law.
This Citizen’s Report is the most efficient mechanism for filing a personnel complaint with our Department. If you have a complaint regarding police personnel, we prefer that you utilize this form, although you may make a complaint by phone, e-mail, or in person. Policy and Procedures 1019 outlines our policy regarding the complaint process, and you are welcome to a copy of this policy should you wish one.
Once we receive your complaint, you will be contacted by a supervisor. The supervisor will ensure that your issue is thoroughly understood and that we have complete information. The supervisor will investigate your complaint and provide the administration staff with an investigative assessment of it and its underlying issues.
When our investigation into your complaint has been completed, you will be notified by the administration in writing of the findings. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of the Police Chief at (650) 595-7404.
*This form is strictly for personnel complaints. If you have a police emergency, please call 9-1-1.
