Belmont Community Center Needs Assessment and Design
Why Redesign the Community Center?
Our community’s need for an updated facility that meets today’s earthquake, fire, and accessibility standards remains vital.
The City of Belmont recognizes that it is more important than ever to provide an inclusive and accessible space for the care and enrichment of our residents and visitors--a space to continue delivering services such as meal programs, health screenings, flu shots, and more to the most vulnerable among us including seniors, children, and families.
As all Californians continue to face events that may require temporary shelter, a local cooling center, or emergency access to power, a modern and centrally-located community center becomes more necessary with every season.
Project Update (Dec. 13, 2022)
Following extensive community outreach, on Nov. 12, 2019, City Council adopted a resolution (1) accepting the Community Advisory Committee's recommendation to approve the Final Conceptual Design and (2) directing staff to pursue funding and development of the building and all amenities.
In late 2022, following a project hiatus due to the economic and social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City revitalized the effort to advance this project and seek funding sources.
Group4 Architects now projects a 17% to 22% cost escalation since 2019, bringing the Q4 2022 total project cost for construction of the building and all amenities concurrently to $67.6 to $69.3 million. A comprehensive construction scope is preferable to avoid further cost escalation, minimize community impacts, and leverage mobilization and construction logistics synergies.
To help bring this project to fruition, residents of the City of Belmont are establishing the Belmont Community Foundation (Foundation), a 501(c)3 organization whose first project will be to engage the community and raise funds for the construction and operation of the new Community Center.
On Nov. 22, 2022, the Foundation presented their vision and purpose to City Council, and on Dec. 13, 2022, the Council authorized the City Manager to negotiate and execute an MOU with the Foundation.
On Jan. 23, 2023, the Council will be asked to adopt a motion ratifying the final MOU and designating a Council representative as a liaison to the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
