This years’ Your Voice, Your Belmont survey is your opportunity to share what's important to you and help shape the future of our city. We want to understand your needs and priorities so we can make informed decisions about how to best allocate resources and serve our community.

As we prepare our long term financial planning amid uncertainty at the state and federal level, and with increasing frequency of climate-related natural disasters as well as earthquakes, we wish to continue to engage with Belmont residents and incorporate your feedback into our long-term budget and emergency planning process. Q: What is the Your Voice, Your Belmont Community Conversation?

A: As we initiate our short- and long-term fiscal planning in the midst of uncertainty at the State and Federal Levels and increasing concerns about natural disasters statewide, we want to obtain feedback on service priorities from the residents we serve. As part of our initial budget planning, the City has relaunched the Your Voice, Your Belmont – a community-wide conversation online and in-person, to identify community service priorities for the future of Belmont, including asking for feedback on general services and the future of the Barrett Community Center.

Q: What needs does our city have?

A: Like many cities in California, Belmont is partially reliant on state and federal funding for core services. With fluctuations at the state and national levels, the City must be prepared to be more self-reliant to address the services residents have previously indicated are important, including:

Fixing potholes

Repairing streets and sidewalks

Keeping public areas healthy, safe, and clean

Keeping storm drain and sewer projects on-time and on-budget

Maintaining parks, open spaces, and sports fields

Maintaining public safety/911 emergency services

Ensuring the Barrett Community Center meets modern-day safety standards

Maintaining multi-generational activities for youths, teens, adults, and seniors (sports, arts and crafts, fitness, and health and wellness programs)

Providing residents with an evacuation center in the case of wildfire threats (like the Los Angeles fires), earthquakes, or other natural disasters

Preparing for natural disasters due to climate change including flooding, mudslides, and wildfires

Q: What needs does the Barrett Community Center have?

A: At over 75 years old, the Community Center requires extensive repairs and maintenance to meet modern-day earthquake, fire safety, and accessibility standards. Without these repairs, the City and community may not be able to use the facility in the near future.

Q: Can the Barrett Community Center serve to address some of our general priorities?

A: A community center can also serve as an emergency resource center; however, currently, the Barrett Community Center does not have the infrastructure or capacity to be utilized for this purpose. The City can leverage matching funds from the State or County to help establish an emergency resource center if those funds remain available.

Maintaining Financial Stability and Essential Services

Thank you to the nearly 900 residents who participated in Your Voice, Your Belmont in 2021. Your participation and feedback have been vital to this year’s budget process and priority setting.

The City continues to work towards having the local control and capacity to be self-sufficient in the event of any emergency. The City must have local control over local funds for local needs, allowing Belmont to be self-reliant and ensuring that our tax dollars are spent for the Belmont community and not taken by the state.

You’ve told us that you value the quality of life that the City of Belmont provides and that maintaining the current level of public works, public safety, and other essential City services is important to you. We are listening and will continue to work to maintain the quality of life you expect and deserve.
