Some friendly reminders about Belmont’s Open Space:

  • Should weather conditions indicate high fire danger in the area, the City may close access to open space.
  • Stay off closed trail sections. Do NOT go around or move barriers or signs.
  • Stay off wet trails. If you leave a tire or footprint, it is too wet.
  • See Trail Etiquette section below for additional open space visitor guidelines.

Salson Trail Update (November 25, 2025)

Due to additional repairs needed due to effects from recent rains, the Salson Trail will NOT reopen for the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend after all.

We will reopen the trail as soon as possible.  This decision is not made lightly but is for everyone’s safety.  Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

About Our Open Space

Located 25 miles south of San Francisco, Waterdog Lake/Hidden Canyon Park contains 260 acres of open space and a multi-use trail system. It's a place for fun, adventure, commune with nature, and service. While the City oversees its management, volunteers have long contributed to trail building and maintenance efforts. Fill out a Volunteer Interest Form today to get involved!

William C. Ralston, founder of the Bank of California, originally commissioned the lake to collect spring water to funnel to his summer home—now known as Ralston Hall Mansion. Following Ralston’s death, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur acquired the land, leasing it to the City of Belmont in 1965. In 1978, John S. Brooks dedicated an additional 51 acres to the City. More information on Belmont’s rich history is available through the Belmont Historical Society.

Hours of Operation

The open space is open from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset. Find today's sunrise and sunset times here!
