2017 Winter Storms

The strong winter storms we experienced in January & February of 2017 caused damage to both public and private property in Belmont. As of now, there are three(3) Federal Disaster Declarations covering specific time periods, two of which include San Mateo County. It appears that damage incurred in the third period may also qualify San Mateo County for inclusion, but that is pending.  The periods are:

  • January 3-12 (FEMA-4301-DR-CA) - San Mateo County NOT currently included. Update pending.
  • January 18-23 (FEMA-4305-DR-CA) - San Mateo County Included.
  • February 1-23 (FEMA-4308-DR-CA) - San Mateo County Included.

The declarations allow for the following entities to apply for assistance - State Agencies, Cities and Counties, Special Districts, School Districts, Community College Districts, Private Non-Profit (PNP) Organizations and Native American Tribes. Unfortunately, private home and business owners are not eligible for assistance under these declarations.

However, as a homeowner, renter and/or personal property owner, you may be able apply to the Small Business Administration (SBA)  for a loan to help you recover from a disaster if you have experienced damage to your home or personal property, even if you do not own a business. While most homeowner and property  insurance policies will cover damage caused by events such as; fire, windstorms, hail, lightning, theft or vandalism, however typically, floods and earthquakes are not covered. You should contact your insurance agent regarding your specific situation before applying for an SBA loan. See our Emergency Preparedness page for additional information on Earthquake and Flood Insurance and the FEMA Disaster Assistance website for more Disaster Recovery Resources.
