Belmont Police Department Honor Guard, and a program to honor our servicemen and women. We honor our soldiers in all U.S. Military branches for their dedication to America’s ideals of freedom and service. We are proud to recognize all those who have served our country each year.

Our annual event is open to all.

Memorial Site Bench Origin

On November 10, 2017, we dedicated our Veterans Memorial Bench in Twin Pines Park in a special ceremony attended by the memorial’s brainchild, former Mayor Eric Reed.  “This will be a wonderful tribute to veterans of all wars and is something to be enjoyed for years to come,” Reed was quoted in the memorial’s press release. “It is a very nice addition to our beautiful Twin Pines Park. We selected this park site because of the high volume of visitors.”

The 2017 memorial team consisted of former City Clerk Terri Cook, Belmont landscape architect Anne Hoffman, and a committee of dedicated community members including Parks and Recreation Commissioner Rich Bortoli, Twin Pines Art Center Manager Judy King, and Parks and Recreation Youth Commissioner Talia Fine. All site preparation and the installation of landscaping and the bench itself was performed in-house by Belmont Parks staff.

Eric Reed Memorial Grove

Inaugural Bench Ceremony 2017

On Dec. 8, 2017, former Mayor Eric Reed passed away at age 50 after an extended battle with cancer. The next Veterans Day Memorial held special significance as our City Council christened the area of the Veterans bench as "Eric Reed Grove," honoring his dedication to our city and local veterans. He is pictured here, far right, waving and seated on the memorial bench that he championed. The site now includes a plaque commemorating Eric’s accomplishment for Belmont.

Veterans Annual Memorial

The recognition of veterans has been an annual event since 2017. Our Veteran’s Memorial is only one of a handful of such memorials in San Mateo County.

Each year, our departments collaborate to present a flag ceremony by the Belmont Police Department Honor Guard and a program to honor our servicemen and women. If you have questions or would like to participate, please email our City Clerk at cclerk@belmont.gov
