Signature of Jiu-Jitsu officially opened its doors at 915 Ralston Ave in Belmont this last November, marking the culmination of a journey that began more than three years earlier with a simple but powerful vision. Founded by a lifelong Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, Atahide Santana, the school was created to be more than just a place to train and focuses on building a safe, welcoming, family-centered environment where students of all ages can learn not only technique, but core values such as respect, care, and community.
For Atahide, Belmont was a natural choice for Signature of Jiu-Jitsu thanks to its strong neighborhood feel and family-oriented culture. Atahide values the city’s emphasis on healthy activities, and he has found the local support from residents and nearby businesses to be a perfect match for his mission.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art centered on leverage, control, and problem-solving, emphasizing ground techniques that allow a less physically strong person to defend themselves effectively. Unlike striking-based disciplines, Jiu-Jitsu relies on positioning and strategy to neutralize opponents, making it one of the most practical forms of real-world self-defense. Beyond self-protection, students develop strength, conditioning, discipline, and the ability to stay calm and make decisions under pressure.
Signature of Jiu-Jitsu offers a wide range of classes designed to meet students exactly where they are. Programs include children’s classes divided into three age and size groups, adult classes separated by skill level, women-only sessions, conditioning and technical reinforcement classes, and individual coaching. With a comfortable waiting area for parents and companions, the academy emphasizes that the mat is an extension of the community and is a place where families connect, students grow together, and everyone feels they belong.
When asked what their favorite Belmont business, Atahide mentioned their neighbors Divino Ristorante!
St. James Gate is a beloved local bar and restaurant tucked away at 1410 Old County Road. From the street it may seem like an ordinary Irish dive, but longtime owner Doug Mottern has transformed the space into something truly unique. The interior evokes a classic speakeasy feel, drawing crowds for live music, trivia, bingo, and karaoke throughout the week. What makes St. James Gate stand out to both newcomers and regulars is its sprawling tropical-themed back patio. The outdoor space offers a cheerful contrast to the cozy bar inside.
The establishment goes beyond just drinks and decor with a menu that reflects classic pub fare done well. Patrons can choose from burgers made with all-natural grass-fed Black Angus beef, wraps, traditional bar favorites like wings, and a robust drink lineup that includes over 400 bourbons, dozens of beers, and hand-crafted cocktails. St. James Gate also features Sunday brunch with bottomless mimosas, making it a destination for both casual dining and lively evening outings.
St. James Gate has become a community staple, attracting a diverse crowd that ranges from local families to whiskey aficionados. With options for catering and private events, as well as themed nights and live entertainment almost every evening, it continues to build its reputation as a hub for both socializing and celebration in Belmont. Whether you’re stopping in for a drink after work or hosting a special event, St. James Gate offers an inviting blend of classic bar charm and contemporary fun.
Belmont’s newest community hub, The Local Spot, is making waves as a vibrant showcase of crafts and goods from local vendors. Launched by Courtney Tomioka and Michele DeSmet, the owners behind beloved pop-up bakery Made Out of Dough, the 900-square-foot space officially opened in Fall of this year.
The storefront located at 196 Old County Road is thoughtfully divided into two areas: a rustic, grab-and-go bakery side, and a colorfully designed vendor marketplace infused with Polynesian design. The bakery side is designed for convenience, without seating, offering Made Out of Dough customer favorites and some new items not previously available at their pop-up markets.
What makes The Local Spot particularly special is its mission to uplift fellow local makers, boasting items from over 20 local small businesses. You can find everything from candles to clothes, and of course, a variety of delicious baked goods. Notably, Tomioka and DeSmet are not taking any commission on vendor sales, noting they just want the space to be a place for the community to showcase their items.
For both residents and small vendors alike, The Local Spot has become a place of connection rooted in community support and shared opportunity. Whether you are looking for a one-of-a-kind holiday gift or are just in need of a sweet treat, The Local Spot is a must-visit.
When Jason "Jolly" Herrick left his software engineering job, he saw it as an opportunity to reinvent himself and chase a sweeter dream. Six years ago, he and Vanessa "Essie" Greene launched their first ice cream trailer, blending Jolly's love of tea with Essie's creative intentionally to create Jolly's Old-Fashioned Teas Cream! Their vision was clear: create an ice cream experience that wasn't typical, where flavors are infused and inspired by teas from all over the world.
After years of searching for the right home base, they found the perfect spot in Belmont, a historic location with deep roots in the community. The building located at 1110 Old County Road, originally constructed in 1910, once housed an ice cream and candy shop more than a century ago. Today, Jolly's Ice Cream honors that history with carefully curated, vintage-inspired décor and a cozy, seasonal atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and new.
Every scoop is handmade in-house using fresh, high-quality ingredients — brewed teas, cocoa powder, real lemons, and more. Their unique lineup of flavors includes customer favorites like Chocolate Smoke and Rose Pistachio, while Jolly's personal picks include Orange Cardamom Chai and Southern Sweet Tea with Lemon. Each recipe blends tea culture with classic ice cream tradition, creating what Jolly calls "vintage ice cream that meets tea culture."
Stop by Jolly's Old-Fashioned Teas Cream for a scoop or pint of ice cream! You can also catch them at events throughout the Bay Area, like Foster City's Off the Grid, or hire them for private events. Stay tuned for their upcoming holiday flavors in mid-November, including Pomegranate Sherbet, Earl Grey Eggnog, Chocolate Peppermint, and Apple Cider. And be on the lookout for a tea service coming soon!
When asked what their favorite Belmont businesses were, Jolly mentioned Tacos El Grullense C&D #4, Falafelle, & Little Belmont Cafe.
Better Together Dance Theatre first opened its doors in 2021 at 617 Mountain View Ave, fulfilling a childhood dream shared between two best friends. Built on a foundation of passion for the performing arts, the studio has quickly grown into a welcoming space where dancers and actors of all ages can learn, create, and connect. More than just a place for training, the studio emphasizes community, self-confidence, and friendships that last well beyond the stage.
Belmont was a natural choice for the studio’s home, as one of the founders had lived and worked in the area for more than 15 years and always felt deeply connected to the community. Opening Better Together Dance Theatre in Belmont was not just about finding the right location, it was about returning to a place that already felt like home. Belmont’s supportive and engaged residents have embraced the studio, helping it thrive as a vibrant part of the local business and arts scene.
Better Together Dance Theatre offers a wide variety of classes and programs to meet every interest and skill level. They have a team of teachers that specialize in Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Modern, Acro, and Salsa, to name a few. In addition to regular classes, the studio also hosts summer programs, birthday parties, ballet retreats, community nights, and live performance workshops. They also have Pod classes available, which are small group classes set up by the customer. These private lesson classes are available for any dance style taught and can accommodate up to six friends, ages three to adults.
For the team, the best part of running a business in Belmont is the strong sense of community. They take great joy in seeing their students grow not just in dance and theatre skills, but in confidence, compassion, and friendship. Watching students cheer each other on both inside and outside the studio is one of the most rewarding parts of their work. Guided by the belief that we are all “better together,” the studio provides a nurturing and inclusive environment where students are encouraged to take risks, discover their talents, and celebrate the joy of the performing arts.
In 1987, Rafael Guerrero and Candelaria Garcia laid the foundation for what would become a beloved family of restaurants, El Grullense. Starting with a humble taco truck in Los Angeles, they grew their dream into sit-down restaurants across California, eventually passing the business on to their children. Each sibling now owns and operates their own locations, continuing the family tradition of authentic Mexican cooking. The Belmont location (575 Ralston Ave), run by Candy Guerrero and David Patino, opened in April 2023.
Belmont was a natural choice for the family’s latest restaurant. Having lived in the city years ago, Candy noted they felt a strong connection to the community and had always admired the building that now houses their taqueria. When the opportunity arose to lease the space, they jumped at the chance to return. Today, they are thrilled to be back, bringing their family recipes to the city they once called home.
Since opening, the restaurant has been embraced by Belmont’s diverse and welcoming community. Locals quickly fell in love with the menu staple—tacos and burritos—as well as newer favorites like Quesabirria, which have become a best-seller. Staff members share that their own favorites include Meaty Fries and the Basket Salad, proving that the kitchen offers something for everyone. Beyond the food, the family says the small-town feel combined with the vibrant energy of Belmont makes operating here especially rewarding.
What sets this taqueria apart is its deep commitment to authenticity and tradition. Every salsa is made from scratch using a cherished family recipe passed down through generations, and every dish is prepared fresh daily. The result is food that not only tastes delicious but also tells the story of a family’s hard work, pride, and love of community. When asked about her favorite Belmont business, Candy enthusiastically noted Livin Sweet.
At the heart of Belmont’s neighborhood dining scene is Farm House, a restaurant with a deeply personal journey behind its new ownership. After helping in the restaurant’s kitchen for years, Edgar was offered the chance to take over. Though the idea initially felt out of reach, a shared sense of trust and purpose led to a gradual transition. Officially taking ownership in December 2024, Edgar saw the opportunity not just as a business venture, but as a calling—something that felt "meant to be." With roots in catering and years of experience in the food industry, Edgar has brought both dedication and innovation to Farm House.
Community is at the center of everything Edgar and Farm House stand for. Edgar expressed gratitude to the restaurant's neighbors, who have welcomed him with warmth and support. Some have even become regulars and friends. The restaurant honors its roots and previous owners by keeping its original name and artwork, while gradually introducing new touches and exciting plans for the future, including expanding lunch service and offering catering. Under Edgar's leadership, the team of 20 works in harmony and embodies the restaurant’s spirit of resilience and camaraderie.
Edgar has kept beloved menu staples like the fried chicken and short ribs, while adjusting recipes to be more inclusive, offering gluten-free options without sacrificing flavor. The menu is thoughtfully curated, emphasizing high-quality ingredients and personal touches, including a popular cornstarch-based fried chicken that’s entirely gluten-free.
Beyond the food, what stands out most is the emotional connection to the space and its community. The restaurant is a sanctuary for both its staff and its owner, who finds peace in the early morning work, the rhythm of kitchen life, and the strength of the team around him.
Having lost his mother, the same day he took over Farm House, every day now holds a deeper significance. Inspired by her legacy as a business owner and caregiver to 11 children, he channels that same grit and love into his work. For Edgar, Farm House isn’t just a place to eat, it’s a living tribute.
Visit Farm House at 1301 6th Ave. When asked about his favorite Belmont business, Edgar had high praise for Vivace Ristorante.
Kyle Bozicevic, the founder of Alpha Acid Brewing Company, had been homebrewing since 2005, when he first opened the only brewery in the Belmont area in 2014 (121 Industrial Road #11). The brewery is located in the Harbor Industrial Area, which is proposed to be annexed into the City of Belmont. Alpha Acid is known for its creativity, quality, and over 600 unique recipes. Often called "the small-batch kings" for their frequently changing selection of beers, the company focuses on crafting one-of-a-kind brews and is currently working on expanding its distribution.
The closeness of the Alpha Acid family and their shared passion for crafting one-of-a-kind beer is evident when you enter the taproom. Everyone wants to be there, fostering creativity and sharing the gift of golden nectar to the Belmont community. Despite their increasing popularity, they remain committed to the same mission that sparked Kyle’s homebrewing adventures 20 years ago—making quality beer!
Named after the component of hops that determines a beer’s bitterness level, Alpha Acid chose to set up in Belmont to establish a fun, family-friendly business in what Kyle sees as a wonderful city. Since then, his team has continued to grow organically. They brew many one-off beers while also re-brewing fan favorites. Since Alpha Acid releases new beers weekly, you could technically visit their taproom once every seven days and still not taste all the brews they make.
Their most popular offerings include a limited release of a very special barrel-aged imperial stout every February and August, which is aged in spirit barrels for over a year. Among staff members, La Chulita, a Mexican-style lager brewed with flaked corn, is a personal favorite. Often seen as an approachable beer that anyone can enjoy, La Chulita is light, refreshing, and full of flavor. In addition, the business also has one of the largest barrel-aged beer programs in the Bay Area and offers a wide variety of beers, including IPAs, lagers, stouts, sour ales, and much more. Open 7 days a week with a rotating variety of local food pop-ups at the brewery, Alpha Acid makes for a great addition to anyone’s week, no matter their schedule. And for those who stop by anytime on Mondays, they will find an all-day happy hour with $5 pints or join trivia on Thursdays at 7 p.m.!
When asked about their favorite local business, the team mentioned that they are big fans of Dog Haus, TAPP’D, and Slice House due to their great food! They also frequent their neighbors, El Metate Taqueria and Little Belmont Cafe.
This July marks 10 years since Iberia first opened its doors in Belmont (740 El Camino), a milestone that speaks volumes about its appeal. The restaurant was relocated to Belmont after the previous building was sold in Menlo Park. Iberia is beautifully decorated with art carefully selected by Owner Jose Luis Relinque, and each piece truly tells a story. Iberia reminds us all to slow down and simply appreciate good food!
The restaurant first opened in 1984, operating on a shoestring budget. Jose Luis' mother helped paint the restaurant, and with his team of two cooks, they cleaned and decorated it with repurposed furniture. The kitchen was outfitted with just a few stoves and a flat iron doubling as a griddle. At the time, there were few cooks familiar with Spanish cuisine, so the menu was primarily continental, with a few Spanish dishes prepared by Jose Luis. Over time, the kitchen staff was trained in Spanish cooking, and two of those original cooks rose to become sous chefs who remained with the restaurant for 37 years. Today, even the most junior employee has been with the business for 18 years.
Belmont has proven to be a warm and supportive community for the restaurant. Jose Luis appreciated that, "The City gives an aura of tranquility that is very conducive to a good quality of life." This pace of life and welcoming environment have played a key role in the restaurant’s continued success and its ability to draw loyal customers from all over.
Iberia's signature dish, the Paella, has served over 400,000 servings and counting. Its rich, aromatic blend of sofrito, shellfish, and rice has become a favorite for both customers and staff. More than just a recipe, it embodies the restaurant’s philosophy of cultivating a love for food, people, and the joy of bringing them together. Jose Luis sees the restaurant as a labor of love, rooted in trust and hospitality.
When asked about his favorite business in Belmont, he immediately mentioned Ristorante Divino.
Tutu School Belmont opened its doors at 2042 Ralston Ave. in March 2024, joining four other Bay Area locations operated by owner Christy Pommerien. The Belmont location was chosen for its vibrant community and the wonderful local businesses surrounding it. The studio is proud to offer families a convenient place to enjoy ballet classes while taking care of errands, after-school activities, and grabbing a bite to eat.
Tutu School is a boutique ballet studio offering classes for children aged six months to eight years old. The school features five age divisions, beginning with Baby Ballet and Tutu Toddlers, where caregivers join their little dancers in class. As students progress into Exploring Ballet and Primary Ballet Prep, they start learning foundational ballet techniques to prepare them for the next stage in their dance journeys. In addition to regular classes, Tutu School offers birthday parties, summer camps, crafting events, and two dance recitals each year.
The Belmont community has welcomed Tutu School with open arms, creating a warm and supportive environment for new and returning families. A sense of friendship and encouragement has been essential to the studio’s success. Parents have eagerly shared their positive experiences, inviting friends and family to join the studio, further strengthening the community bonds within Belmont.
To encourage new families to experience the magic of ballet, Tutu School Belmont offers a free trial class to all first-time dancers. They warmly invite the Belmont community to visit the studio, experience the joy of dance, and see firsthand what makes Tutu School a special place for young dancers.
When asked about their favorite local business, Assistant Director Maranda Wirth noted that staff enjoy grabbing some food at Lunardi's to fuel up before teaching a class.
Row House Belmont (410 El Camino Real) is more than just a boutique fitness studio—it’s a thriving community where people of all fitness levels come together to challenge themselves and grow stronger. Opened in 2019 by Jenn Wayman, Row House Belmont offers a low-impact, full-body workout in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
After an extensive search for the right fitness franchise, Jenn was drawn to the unique appeal of Row House, ultimately securing a location in Belmont, noting that the strong sense of community made her choice easy. The camaraderie built during classes extends beyond the studio, with members forming lasting friendships. Belmont’s close-knit feel made it the perfect home for Row House, reinforcing the studio’s emphasis on community-driven wellness.
The workout experience at Row House is designed to be both effective and engaging. With a variety of class formats ranging from full rowing sessions to strength-training-focused classes, participants can tailor their fitness journey to their individual needs. Unlike other high-intensity boutique fitness studios, Row House fosters a non-competitive, team-oriented atmosphere. The rowing machine’s effort-based mechanics ensure that individuals of all ages and abilities can participate at their own pace while still rowing with the group.
With a focus on consistency, progress, and celebrating milestones, members are recognized for their achievements, whether they’ve rowed their first 100,000 meters or surpassed 10 million. Row House Belmont offers effective and welcoming workouts where fitness goals are met and friendships are formed, all while rowing in "one boat" together.
Jenn shared that her favorite local Belmont Business is Marvin Gardens, noting that she has hosted several member events there.
Ajay Walia and Reena Miglani have created a Mediterranean oasis in the heart of Belmont! With their extensive background in the restaurant industry, they take great pride in providing an immersive experience from the moment patrons walk through the doors at Amara.
Reena noted that the Peninsula "feels like home," which is part of why they decided to open a restaurant in Belmont. Ajay and Reena had initially considered other areas, but after seeing the location and the thought of being able to serve their community, they knew Belmont was the right fit for them.
Inspired by their family travels across the Mediterranean, Ajay and Reena carefully curated both the menu and the restaurant’s aesthetic to reflect the colors, flavors, and warmth of the region. Their goal is to transport guests with every detail—offering a dining experience that feels like a small escape from the bustle of the Bay Area.
Ajay and Reena personally approve every dish before it is added to the menu, ensuring the highest quality for their guests. Amara’s head chef has even introduced them to new flavors, incorporating unique ingredients like rabbit, quail, and bold spice blends. Standout menu items include black hummus, a diverse selection of pickled accompaniments, and protein-focused dishes that pair perfectly with the various sides and small bites. With an “ingredient-first” approach, the restaurant prioritizes sustainability by selecting seasonal food and using every part of an ingredient creatively.
Although Reena and Ajay enjoy all the businesses in Carlmont Shopping Center, they shared that Gin Mon is their favorite place to eat when they're not busy crafting unforgettable experiences at Amara. Visit Amara at 1015 Alameda de las Pulgas.
The Cats’ Inn, located at 880 Old County Road, opened its doors in 1995 and officially moved to Belmont in 2019. The facility was rebuilt from the ground up to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for all cats with the goal to provide a luxurious and entertaining “home away from home” where every feline guest can feel relaxed and happy.
The first owner of The Cats' Inn saw a distinct need in the pet care world and setoff to create a peaceful and calm environment that cats need to feel truly comfortable. Understanding this, she decided to create an exclusive, cat-only hotel designed specifically with the needs of felines in mind. They chose to do business in Belmont because of its great location in the heart of the Bay Area. Staff noted that Belmont offers many opportunities for growth and success in a connected and thriving community.
In addition to exclusive cat-only boarding, a complete range of grooming services are offered to keep your cat looking and feeling their best. Services include kitty baths to keep cats fresh and clean, nail trims to ensure their paws are in top shape, brush-outs to prevent mats and keep their coat shiny, and haircuts for cats needing a little extra grooming. They also offer cat sitting services, so if you're away, your cat can stay in the comfort of their own space with personalized care.
When asked about their favorite part of the business, general manager Victoria Usher noted how she enjoyed “connecting with the families every day and providing cat exclusive amenities.” Operations coordinator Alexa Ferguson expressed her love for “discovering new things about the kitties and all their unique, fun personalities.” Rest assured, your cats are in loving hands at the Cats’ Inn for your next vacation!
Staff unanimously agreed that Lorenzo’s Sandwich Shop was their favorite Belmont business.
Opening in early 2024, Belmont Deli has already made a name for itself with its authentic Italian sandwiches, breakfast bagels, and stunning charcuterie boards! After working at his family grocery store and deli for years, owner Spiro Hanhan decided to branch out and open his own deli in Belmont. His roots in Belmont run deep, as his uncle used to own a local sandwich shop, making this location the perfect place to bring his vision to life.
At the Belmont Deli, quality is key. Spiro imports premium meats from Italy, while all other ingredients—from the bread to the produce— are sourced locally. Every sandwich is made to order, with meats and vegetables freshly sliced on-site and most condiments and sides crafted in-house. Spiro personally designed the menu, keeping the sandwich names and descriptions simple to ensure customers know exactly what to expect.
One of Spiro’s newfound passions is creating charcuterie boards, which he describes as edible art—no two are ever the same. Perfect for any occasion, Belmont Deli’s boards and grazing tables can be customized to suit a customer’s preferences.
Interested customers can order through their website or stop by 932 Ralston Ave. and order in person. Belmont Deli is a must-visit whether you’re craving a classic Italian sandwich or a one-of-a-kind charcuterie experience.
When asked about his favorite local business, Spiro mentioned Belmont Classic Barbershop, a new neighbor that opened its doors around the same time as the deli.
Since early 2022, Livin Sweet, originally named Belmont Fruit and Snacks, has been delighting customers with authentic Mexican sweets and snacks. With everything from mangonadas, raspados (Mexican shaved ice), to puffed wheat snacks called duritos, Livin Sweets offers something for every taste and season.
When asked why he chose Belmont, owner David Ibarra shared that his daughter Jennifer always wanted an ice cream shop. Since there weren't other stores or restaurants in Belmont offering traditional Mexican treats, it felt like the perfect fit. The changing seasons, weather, and customer requests help Ibarra decide which flavors to use for their freshly made agua frescas. Jennifer noted that during the warmer seasons, ice cream and drinks are customer favorites, while crepes and corn covered in Hot Cheetos are big hits during the colder months.
When asked what their favorite Belmont business was, Jennifer and David said they enjoy El Matate Taqueria.
Since opening, Divino has amassed a large group of loyal customers who often eat at the restaurant two to three times a week, which has allowed Vargas and his staff to really get to know everyone who comes through their doors. He noted that Belmont has always been very good to him and his business, sharing that he recently signed a new twenty-year lease. “I’m staying,” he announced with a large grin on his face.
