Belmont, California – On November 29th Belmont City Manager Afshin Oskoui announced the appointment of Kenneth (Ken) Stenquist as the city’s next Chief of Police; following a national search facilitated by an executive search consultant. Since July 2021, Ken served as Interim Police Chief upon the retirement of Chief Psalia.
Ken is a 20-year veteran of the Belmont Police Department he served as the department’s Operations Lieutenant for the last two years. He is highly respected by his peers throughout the county and known for his tireless work ethic. He oversaw the creation of the police department’s newly formed Community Academy, as well as the Crisis Assessment Response and Education (C.A.R.E.) program created to manage the City’s response to mental health emergencies. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame de Namur University and will soon complete a master's degree in public administration from California Coast University.
Stenquist rose through the ranks of the department and served the community in a wide variety of assignments, including: Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, School Resource Officer, SWAT Team Leader, Firearms Instructor, Patrol Sergeant, and Operations Lieutenant before his appointment as Chief of Police.
Chief Stenquist said, “I’m proud and honored to be chosen to lead the outstanding men and women of the Belmont Police Department. The continued success of our Police Department is vital to the wellbeing of our community. I am committed to keeping lines of communication open with the community, and maintaining trust between our officers and the public.”
On the new Chief’s appointment, City Manager Oskoui said, “Our Police Department has a tradition of community-oriented policing, and under Ken’s leadership we will continue building upon a responsive, transparent and innovative department which will serve our community well. I very much look forward to working closely with Chief Stenquist and continue to ensure Belmont is a safe and welcoming community. Ken has earned the trust of the Belmont community and we look forward to his leadership.”
