Infrastructure and Mobility |
Wireless coverageAt its Council meeting of October 26, 2021, City staff introduced an Ordinance amending the Belmont City Code and the Belmont Zoning Ordinance to comprehensively update wireless facility regulations, such as antennas, that are on buildings and poles throughout Belmont to connect mobile phones and other wireless network services. The updates are needed to comply with state and federal laws, which significantly limit how cities can regulate this kind of infrastructure. We have written the guidelines to give the city as much control as possible over where this infrastructure can be installed and what it should look like. The overarching goal of the project is to provide a robust wireless network to meet the needs of the Belmont community, while at the same time minimizing impacts. In order to achieve this goal and conform to the requirements of state and federal law, the City’s wireless telecommunication regulations are proposed to be completely rewritten, and would include: 1) Preferred & Discouraged Locations 2) Design Standards 3) Performance Standards 4) Process Efficiencies |
Continued Storm CleanupThis past week the Public Works Operations crew continued clean up after the storm. Staff at all levels worked with CalTrans to clean out the creek just south of Harbor Boulevard and west of Highway 101. There was a large tree stuck at a headwall there that allowed debris and silt to gather and caused the creek to surcharge upstream during the heavy rain. CalTrans removed the large tree and our staff cleaned up the rest of the debris there to allow the creek to flow at a higher capacity. See attached pictures of before and after the cleaning. Since the creek at Harbor Boulevard and Highway 101 downstream of Water Dog Lake was cleared for higher flow, staff have opened one of two standpipe drainage gate valves at the Water dog Lake dam to release the water stored for the dry season and allow for more capacity of storm water in the wet season. The second drainage gate valve will be opened at a later date to prevent flooding from excessive flow in the creek. Attached are pictures of the dock and shore to see the drop in water level and a map showing the route of the flow from the lake to the slough. |

Rapid Flashing Beacon InstalledThe Public Works Department Traffic and Electrical Operations Division installed a new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) on Ralston Avenue at the Villa Avenue crosswalk. The old RRFB needed to be replaced after a vehicle collision. The new RRFB is now operational and works in conjunction with the two RRFB’s that were recently relocated as part of the Ralston Avenue Corridor Segment 3 improvements. |

COVID-19 Vaccination UpdateIt’s been a banner week for vaccination news! This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) fully agreed with its Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ recommendation that children ages 5 to 11 be vaccinated against COVID-19 with the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine. According to the CDC, “Vaccinating children will help protect them from getting COVID-19 and therefore reducing their risk of severe disease, hospitalizations, or developing long-term COVID-19 complications. Getting your children vaccinated can help protect them against COVID-19, as well as reduce disruptions to in-person learning and activities by helping curb community transmission.”
Additional dates will be added as needed. San Mateo County Health will continue to share options on its website.
Continued caution
Make sure your family is up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations and, if appropriate, boosters In addition to Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson boosters are available through vaccination events at the San Mateo County Event Center, pharmacies, healthcare systems, and smaller clinics serving communities across the county.
