Second Quarter Sales Tax Update The most recent second quarter 2021 results from the City’s revenue consultant, HdL, reflects considerable improvement over prior year lows that were a direct result of the COVID-19 economic shutdown impacts. With the pandemic spread now decreasing, restaurants and hotels have begun to rebound and casual dining is up 65%, though still well below pre-pandemic levels. However, building material stores that had been temporarily closed in the comparable quarter in this area have outpaced statewide trends, showing gains of 38.9%. Overall, Belmont’s receipts from April through June for actual sales were up 34.0% from the second quarter of 2020, after reporting aberrations were accounted for. Similar to recent quarters, online sales have risen, but the growth has been modest. Belmont’s allocation of the use tax pool showed a decline due to place of sale receipts being stronger for other agencies in a countywide pool, which resulted in a smaller portion for Belmont. Measure I was boosted by robust vehicle purchases and some one-time construction deliveries into the City. Taxable sales for all of San Mateo County grew 46.7% over the comparable time period last year, and the Bay Area was up 34.1%. |

| Public Works Sewer and Storm Division Rescues Ben the Cat Public Works staff coordinated with a Belmont resident who lost her cat, Ben, in the storm drain system near Fifth Avenue and Broadway for a rescue mission. Ben somehow ended up in the storm drain system and was unable to escape due to the depth drains in this area. Perhaps he was hunting a racoon, and chased it down there? Poor Ben was missing for five days. A team of Public Works staff worked with the resident to close off the storm system and use our CCTV inspection camera to encourage (chase, scare?) the cat toward an open storm drain inlet. The CCTV camera is remote controlled and runs on wheels. It’s a great tool for surveying system condition and apparently, getting cats to run away from it. The mission was a success! Public Works staff were waiting at the open storm drain inlet to help Ben get out, but he ran immediately to a neighbor's yard, poor guy. The resident told us he would be all right once he calmed down and return home, and that is exactly what happened. Ben did return home a few hours later and is doing just fine. So, the next time you have a rough week, think of Ben! It’ll get better, and if it doesn’t, call Public Works to the rescue. |

COVID-19 Booster updates The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was expected to take the final step yesterday to approve a Moderna booster shot for those 65 and older or who are at an increased risk. Everyone who got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine would be eligible for a booster shot after two months, also pending final approval on Friday by the CDC. Currently, Pfizer is the only vaccine approved for booster shots, and only for those 65 and older or in a high-risk group. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has also approved a mix and match approach to boosters, meaning if the additional boosters are approved by the CDC, you can get a different booster than your original vaccine. It’s about here that I should remind everyone to check with their own health care providers for recommendations on boosters and all other health matters! Vaccines for kids 5-11 The FDA is expected to approve the Pfizer vaccine for kids ages 5 through 11 the first week of November. In anticipation of that, the federal government announced Wednesday that it already has enough in hand to inoculate every child in this age range in the United States. The announcement said the specially packaged vaccines would be available at more than 25,000 pediatricians’ and doctors’ offices, hospitals, pharmacies, community health centers, and school- and community-based clinics. Get Rid of Prescription Medication Safely This Saturday, Oct. 23, is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, created by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to give people a safe way to dispose of unneeded or expired prescription drugs, including opioids, with no questions asked. You can look up locations details on this website. |
