| On August 25, 2021 Belmont Officers were called to an elementary school on the report of an ongoing theft of electricity from the school. Officers arrived and saw damage to an air conditioning unit where suspects accessed the unit with extension cords to steal power. Personnel from the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department were called to the scene to keep the area safe.
Once safe, officers followed the extension cords which led them to an encampment in the open space next to the school’s property. Two individuals, 26-year-old Ryan Tuli and 33-year-old Edgar SanchezArellano, both from San Mateo, were located at the encampment. During the investigation Officers noticed several items being powered by the school’s electricity. Both Tuli and SanchezArellano were arrested for theft of utility services along with outstanding warrants.
After speaking with the suspects, Officers suspected they were responsible for starting a brush fire in the area in July 2021. A criminal complaint has been sought against Tuli and SanchezArellano for starting the fire.
