City of Belmont to host virtual public safety listening forum

Belmont, Calif. (July 6, 2020) — The City of Belmont will host an online public safety listening forum on Wednesday, July 15, at 6 p.m. to gather input from the community on policing and public safety in the City of Belmont.
The goal of the forum is to listen to the community about the existing perceptions and experiences with the Belmont Police Department and the department’s interactions with the community. This input will help guide the City’s efforts to advance policies and procedures that ensure safety and equity for all in Belmont.
As a community, this open forum provides an opportunity to hear your ideas of advancing community relationships. The Committee will then review protocols, explore experiences of the public and work with the police department to support a forward-thinking public safety services aligned with community needs including civic engagement, partnerships, and public education to improve policing, health, and public safety.
In support of community health, and in alignment with San Mateo County public health orders to reduce the spread of COVID-19, the City is hosting the forum online, led by the Belmont City Council Public Safety and Health in Policing Subcommittee Members Davina Hurt and Julia Mates, with attendance by Chief of Police Tony Psaila and City Manager Afshin Oskoui.
How to Participate
The City is providing a number of ways for the community to participate in the public safety listening forum, in order to increase participation and ensure residents have an opportunity to provide input in the way that best suits their needs.
- Provide Public Comments during the Forum: To provide oral public comments during the meeting, please register in advance on the City’s website. To register, participants need to provide their name and email address; the email address will not be shared with the public. After completing registration, participants will receive an email with instructions on how to participate as a speaker in the meeting.
- Send Comments by Email:To provide comments by email, please send to PSSC@belmont.govin advance of the forum to be included in the written record.
- Submit a Personal Interview:The City is collecting personal interviews in an effort to gather as many perspectives as possible. The Subcommittee Members recognize that not all community members feel comfortable making comments or sharing their stories in a public setting. Please contact Belmont City Hall at 650-595-7408 to make an appointment for a personal interview with Councilmembers Hurt and Mates.

All comments received via the website, email and public testimony will be made part of the written record for the meeting and provided to the City Council.
