The tragic death of Mr. George Floyd in Minneapolis has rocked our entire Nation. Like so many others, I was appalled by the shocking video that depicted such cruelty, and was ashamed of the darkness that has once again been cast upon the Law Enforcement profession, everywhere. I wish to offer my deepest condolences to the Floyd family for their loss, and my thoughts go out to the Minneapolis community in the hope that no others will be hurt during the ensuing aftermath.
One cannot help but wonder why this tragedy occurred, and be concerned about policing policies, training and transparency issues in the Law Enforcement community. I am grateful Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arrandonodo took immediate action, and I hope justice will be served. In the meanwhile, peaceful protests are absolutely appropriate, but destruction and violence do nothing to help this valiant cause, and wind up hurting undeserving, innocent people.
Some have reached out to me and asked what we do here in Belmont to ensure tragedies like this do not happen. I’ll begin by telling you that it all starts with our hiring process. We make every effort possible to hire only those with the highest moral standards and integrity, who are becoming police officers for the right reasons and who desire to help and become a part of our community. We then provide our officers with a vast array of training, which includes cultural diversity and racial profiling training, as well as use-of-force and de-escalation tactics. We issue all our officers body cameras, and we have created policies to increase transparency and help create partnerships within our community. We post all of our policies and the training we receive on our website for all to view.
We have worked very hard to earn our community’s trust, and we will continue to do everything we can to maintain that trust. We will continue to listen and strive to work on a future built on respect, dignity and fairness.
