Contact: Captain Patrick Halleran - Public Information Officer, Belmont Police Department (650) 595-7430

An elderly woman was struck and killed by a minivan, while crossing El Camino, this morning in Belmont.  No other vehicles were involved and the driver of the minivan was uninjured and is cooperating with investigators.

On Friday, May 3, at approximately 6:45 AM, Belmont Police responded to a report of an auto-pedestrian collision on El Camino at 5th Avenue.  Upon arrival, Officers found the victim, an 83 year old San Carlos woman, down in the roadway.  The victim was treated at the scene by San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department paramedics and was transported to an area hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.  The driver, an 80 year old San Mateo woman, was on-scene and is cooperating with investigators.

The pedestrian, who was using a walker, appears to have been crossing El Camino eastbound on the south side of the intersection, where there is no marked crosswalk.  The driver was southbound on El Camino in a 2000 Toyota Sienna minivan, when she struck the woman in the intersection.  There is no indication at this time that drugs or alcohol or speed, were factors and the driver is fully cooperating with investigators.

The portion of southbound El Camino between Harbor Boulevard and 5th Avenue was either fully or partially closed to traffic until approximately noon for the on-scene investigation.  Belmont PD was assisted at the scene by personnel from the San Carlos Bureau of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators are still looking for witnesses and anyone with information on this collision, or the events leading up to it, is asked to contact Belmont Police at (650) 595-7400 or
