Police Investigate Fatal Shooting
Contact: Captain Patrick Halleran, Public Information Officer - Belmont Police Department (650) 595-7430
Belmont Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a 17 year old male late Monday night. While the investigation is in its initial stages, and is on-going, the following information is available.
On Monday, January 7, 2019 at approximately 10:55pm, Belmont Police responded to Central Elementary School, in the 500 blk of Middle Rd, on a request for a welfare check. The family of a 17 year old Redwood City youth had called police stating that they believed that the youth was at the school and they were concerned for him. Officers arrived at the school shortly after 11:00pm and found the victim lying in the parking lot, at the front of the school, with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers began life saving efforts, but the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by Belmont Fire Department Paramedics.
Belmont Police were assisted at the scene by the San Mateo Police, San Mateo County Sheriff's Forensic Lab and Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services. Belmont detectives are currently working closely with the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office and are interviewing potential witnesses and following up on leads, as of this press release.
While this investigation is in its beginning phase, detectives are confident that this was not a random crime and the victim and suspect were associated. The victim has no relationship to the school where the shooting took place and there is no connection between the school and the crime.
Additional information will be provided when it becomes available. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Belmont Police at (650) 595-7400 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Information can also be left on the Belmont Police Crime Tip Line at (650) 598-3000.
