Contact: Captain Patrick Halleran, Public Information Officer - Belmont Police and Fire Departments (650) 595-7430
A 37 yr old Castro Valley man was arrested Friday afternoon in the East Bay after using credit cards taken from an unlocked vehicle in Belmont earlier in the day.
On Friday 3/9/18 at approximately 9:30AM, a resident in the 2700 block of Ponce Avenue discovered that her purse, which she had left in her unlocked car parked overnight in front of her home, was missing. Belmont Police investigators were able to trace the victim's credit cards, which were used later in the day at several locations in Belmont and the East Bay city of San Leandro.
Belmont and San Leandro Police cooperated in the investigation and the suspect, Matthew Jefferey Hunt age 37 of Castro Valley, was located later in the day, and arrested for possession of stolen property by San Leandro Police. Additional charges, including burglary, credit card fraud and identity theft against Hunt are pending.
Belmont Police would like to remind the public not to leave valuables in vehicles and to lock your vehicle, even if it is parked in your driveway or in front of your home. If you are the victim of a crime, it is important to report it as soon as it is discovered, as was done in this case. Belmont Police would also like to thank the San Leandro Police for their cooperation during this investigation.
