Councilmember Eric Reed
CONTACT: Charles Stone, Mayor
Belmont, CA – Councilmember Eric Reed, who served on the City Council since 2013 and as Mayor in 2016, passed away last Friday evening (December 8th) at his home, following an extended illness. His family was by his side and informed the city of his passing. Councilmember Reed recently celebrated his 50th birthday.
The family asked that any media inquiries be handled by the Mayor, Charles Stone. The Mayor also ordered all flags at city facilities to be lowered to half-staff.
Mayor Stone said, “It is with a very heavy heart that I share that my friend and colleague, Councilmember and former Mayor, Eric Reed passed away after valiantly fighting cancer for several years. Eric always had impeccable timing and yesterday was two years to the day he was sworn in as Mayor of Belmont. Despite the toll of battling this awful disease, Eric continued to dedicate himself to bettering Belmont, as he had since 2008 when he joined the Planning Commission. Not once did he let his cancer interfere with his work as Mayor or Councilmember. I've worked with many Councilmembers on different bodies and Eric was the best, hands down. His wisdom, wit, grace, and clarity of good intention were amazing to behold. He was taken from all of us far too soon.”
Eric was a strong supporter of Belmont and during his time on the council worked tirelessly to help improve the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, the Downtown, parks and more recently led the effort to create a Veteran’s Memorial in Twin Pines Park.
Eric and his wife Laura moved to Belmont in 2002 because, as he said, it was a great place to raise his two boys. Although this is a profound loss, Belmont is even better because of his efforts.
Councilmember Reed’s term ends in November 2018 and the City Council has not discussed how to fill this vacancy.
Additional information about services will be available when provided by the Reed family.
