High Speed Rail
(HSR)

Statewide plans are still under development; however, High Speed Rail (HSR) will impact Belmont.  It’s important that residents keep apprised of progress on this ambitious project.

  • In 2008, California voters approved the sale of nearly $10 billion in bonds to build an 800 mile High Speed Train system connecting San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Anaheim, and San Diego
  • From San Francisco to San Jose, the high speed trains will parallel Caltrain.  But, HSR trains will NOT stop in Belmont; stations will be in Millbrae, and possibly Redwood City or Palo Alto
  • Up to 10 trains per hour will travel 120 mph through the peninsula, and 220 mph in less populated areas.  On a limited-stop train, the 432 mile trip from SF to LA will take about 2 hours and 40 minutes,
  • Trains will be electric, powered by overhead catenaries, and Caltrain also intends to convert to electric trains with catenaries.
