Anyone can be a part of the litter brigade and protect our environment.  Here are just a few ways you can get involved in helping reduce cigarette butt litter:

SHARE INFORMATION-TELL A FRIEND

Cigarette butts are the number one item littered in America.  In 2014, Belmont's Coastal Cleanup Day volunteers collected a whopping 1,338 littered cigarette butts.  Aside from being unsightly, they are toxic to our environment. Once they are flicked on the ground, they can make their way to the creeks and storm drains.  Ultimately, the butts and they chemicals they contain end up in the bay, damaging wildlife and living organisms they come in contact with.

VOLUNTEER AT A LOCAL EVENT

The Annual Coastal Cleanup Day Event

Held the third week of September, volunteers come out from 9-noon for this big event.  Cleanup sites include two portions of Belmont Creek, Water Dog Lake, O’Neill Slough-south, and O’Neill Slough-north.  Check the City Calendar for upcoming details and registration information.

Earth Day Outreach Booth

Volunteer your time at your own outreach table getting the word out about litter/cigarette prevention during the Earth Day Celebration.  This event is held on a Saturday, usually before or after Earth Day.  Check the City Calendar for upcoming details.

FOR BUSINESSES AND MULTI-UNIT COMPLEXES

Join other businesses and multi-unit complexes to show your support in reducing litter.  As a supporter of cigarette butt litter prevention, we will provide you with some pocket ashtrays for your smoking patrons/residents to dispose of their butts responsibly.  It’s a great way for the community to come together in helping reduce this toxic litter.  If you would like to participate, please contact Diane Lynn @ dlynn@belmont.gov or 650-595-7425.

You can also support litter prevention by keeping property frontages such as sidewalks, curb and gutter clear of cigarette butt litter.

BE AN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY SMOKER

Cigarette Butts are Litter Too- Be an environmentally friendly smoker.  Instead of flicking cigarette butts on the ground, use an outdoor receptacle, portable auto ashtray or pocket ashtray.  Get one FREE at the Public Works Department located at One Twin Pines Lane, Suite 385 in City Hall.
