Green Advisory Committee

Meeting commenced at 7:06 P.M.
1. Self-introductions
2. No agenda amendments
3. Minutes of 7/23/08 were moved to the October 29, 2008 meeting.
4. Other Business
Carlos de Melo noted for the record:
Jonathan Gervais was appointed as the new Parks and Recreation Director; Art Andrews will take his place on the Parks Commission and Kevin Sullivan will take the lead on the Sustainability Committee.
Michael Kazarian is the new Chamber of Commerce President.

a. Reaffirmation of Committee Goals & Objectives
Bill Dickson & Christine Wozniak recommended scheduling appointments to meet with each Committee Chair. The goal is to begin to formulate an Action Plan that can be presented to the City for adoption. Reference to the City of San Mateo, Sustainable Initiatives Plan was mentioned.
b. Status Reports from Subcommittees
· Building & Utilities – Group will meet next week
· Outreach
Committee members met & discussed areas to target such as:
a. business, schools and the community at large.
b. Suggestion of a “Green” Map indicating the city’s “green”businesses was mentioned along with incentives to encourage use of green products.
c. Music festivals, information booths and tee shirts were a discussed as a venue to get the word out to Belmont residents.
· Sustainability
Examples of some topics discussed at their meeting:
a. Encourage the City to take the lead, and to lead by example: making “green choices” in purchase items and overall business practice….. publicize these changes.
b. Encourage gardens in Schools
c. Create a Tree Library
d. What makes it green? and how can it be measured?
Would like the opportunity to take their findings to the Community prior to presenting to Council.
· Transportation
Several ideas discussed at their meeting were shared with the group:
a. Alternative working cycles, speed limits, alternative commuting incentives, Cal Train to add more bike racks, lead based lights at street crossings. More people are using bicycles and skateboards - education is needed on sharing the roads.
b. Would like police to ticket drivers that don’t stop at stop signs.
c. Widen bicycle lanes and clearly articulate the lanes.
· Waste Reduction & Recycling
a. Beginning to work on final document to Council
b. Created several links to point to web sites on waste reduction
c. Educate property managers of Apartments and Condos on recycling procedures.
d. Encourage people to learn about ways they can recycle.
c. Concluding Comments & Round Table
1.) Walking School Bus Program – instead of taking a bus a group of students and Parents are walking to school. 2.)Potentially, Carlmont High School could collaborate with community groups to work on a variety of projects such as Beach Clean up day / Green Day etc.
d. Holiday Schedule:
Due to the Holidays – below are the GAC Meeting dates through December 2008.
