Auto-Bicycle Collision Slows Morning Commute
Contact: Captain Patrick Halleran (650) 595-7430
A bicyclist was struck by a car this morning on the Ralston Ave overpass at Hwy 101, when he cut across several lanes into the path of a car.
Today at approximately 7:35AM, Belmont Police and Fire units responded to the report of a traffic collision involving a bicyclist on Ralston Ave at Hwy 101. Upon arrival, first responders found that a 30 year old Belmont man who had been riding eastbound on the overpass, was struck by a 1997 Geo Prism sedan. The bicyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was treated at the scene by Belmont Fire Department paramedics and was transported to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The driver of the sedan was not injured.
The cause of the collision is under investigation, but according to witnesses, the bicyclist had been riding in the far left-hand eastbound lane and cut across two lanes into the path of the sedan that was also eastbound.
The Belmont Police would like to remind both motorists and bicyclists that they share the road and to be alert for each other. Bicyclists are also reminded that like motorists, they have to follow the rules of the road and drive defensively.
